[Liszt, Franz. (1811–1886)] Weingartner, Felix. (1863–1942)

Autograph Musical Quotation

Autograph musical quotation from the great Austrian conductor, composer, and pianist who was one of Liszt's last pupils.  He has penned a short motive of two measures in E flat major, signed boldly and dated Vienna, February 2, 1926.  The autograph is dedicated to Imre Békessy, the controversial editor-in-chief of the Vienna tabloids Die Stunde and Die Bühne.  On an album leaf with slight toning, otherwise in very fine condition.  17.5 x 10.5 cm.

Born in Austria-Hungary, Weingartner studied piano in Leipzig and then in Weimar with Franz Liszt.  In his long conducting career he led orchestras and operas in Berlin, Munich, Mainz, Vienna (succeeding Gustav Mahler as the director of the Vienna Hofoper), Boston, and Basel. Alongside his conducting, he considered himself as equally, if not more importantly, a composer, and left seven symphonies, several operas, chamber music and art songs. (12911)
