[Pianist] Kapell, William. (1922–1953) & Iturbi, José. (1895–1980)

Signed Concert Program

Concert program from the brilliant young American pianist's 1946 performance with the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra, boldly signed by Kapell and by the Spanish conductor and pianist José Iturbi, in attendance at the concert.  Some wear to the edges, toning and tape remnants; otherwise in fine condition.  15 x 22.7 cm.

Kapell and Iturbi's connection went back to Kapell's childhood: a turkey dinner with Iturbi was the prize for the first competition he won at age ten!  At this concert, Kapell was performing the work most often associated with him, Khatchaturian's Piano Concerto No. 1, which he would record later in 1946 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Serge Koussevitzky.  The young pianist's life was tragically cut short in a plane crash in 1953.
