[Lieder] Fischer-Dieskau, Dietrich. (1925–2012) & Moore, Gerald. (1899–1987) & Seefried, Irmgard. (1919–1988) & Lane, Maryon. (1931–2008)

Autograph Signatures from the 1953 Edinburgh Festival

Autograph signatures of the German baritone known as the greatest Lied singer of the twentieth century, the distinguished German soprano and the great English collaborative pianist.  The three appeared together in a recital of Hugo Wolf's Italienisches Liederbuch at the 1953 Edinburgh Festival.  The signatures appear together on a single album leaf.

On the verso, three signatures from the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet, including well-known South African ballerina Maryon Lane and Doreen Tempest (also known as Doreen Wells.)  One further unidentified signature.  A newspaper photograph is affixed to the upper left corner.

Left edge rough and slightly faded; otherwise in fine condition.  14 x 11 cm. Gerald Moore is a surprisingly uncommon autograph in any format.

"On the concert platform, Fischer-Dieskau was imposing. Always immaculate, his posture was elegant, attentive; he was self-evidently listening. He was invariably generous in acknowledging his accompanist. Whether singing Bach, with inspired simplicity, or Strauss (or, for that matter, Delius) with extrovert passion, his overall mastery was such that every performance was an "event" and – as a consequence – the lieder recital became, in the post-war years, a popular manifestation. And surely, his mannerisms notwithstanding, no other baritone delivered a more beautiful sound with such intelligence and intensity." (Robert Ponsonby in "The Independent," May 18, 2012) (12882)
