Cushman, Charlotte. (1816-1876)

Autograph Note Canceling a Rehearsal

Autograph note from the acclaimed 19th-century American stage actress known for her deep voice and tempestuous lesbian affairs. It reads: "My dear Sir.  Will you excuse me to Mr. Ray this morning for my scene.  I am not well.  I would much rather not come away.  Would you go over the scene with him this morning for me.  I will run through it at night - twice if he chooses.  In haste... Charlotte Cushman."  Undated.  With mounting remnants on the verso, slight discoloration, and a chip to the signature; otherwise in fine condition.  9.2 x 11.1 cm.

"An extremely popular actress in Europe as well as the United States, Cushman was at her best in powerfully emotional roles, showing little talent for subtlety or comedy. She played more than 30 masculine roles in her lifetime. Her personal life, though unmarked by scandal, was centred on her community of women friends. From 1852 to 1870 Cushman lived in England and Italy, thereafter settling in the United States."  Encyclopedia Britannica (12793)
