Bennett, Robert Russell. (1894-1981)

Autograph Musical Manuscript Sketchleaf

Manuscript sketchleaf from an unidentified orchestral work, signed "Sincerely, Robert Russell" by the most important orchestrator in Broadway history, arranger for Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, and George Gershwin, and himself a notable composer. Twelve measures of music are written neatly in ink over eighteen staves on recto and verso, pages numbered 81 and 82 at the head, an orchestration for woodwinds, brass, harp and piano. The leaf appears to have been cut above the lowest systems, presumably the string parts. The excerpted music is the end of a section in 4/4 time, with woodwind and brass solos marked "pp dolce," followed by a double bar and the first measure of a new section marked "Piu mosso." Horizontal and vertical creases; some wear and evidence of removed tape at the edges; otherwise in fine condition. 27.3 x 25.2 cm.
Robert Russell Bennett, best-known for his orchestrations of Broadway classics such as Showboat, Oklahoma, Girl Crazy, Anything Goes, Annie Get Your Gun and South Pacific, was also a prolific composer of orchestral and concert band works, many on American themes. Manuscript material is very uncommon on the market. (12702)
