Autograph Musical Quotation from Gounod's "Mireille"

AMQS of four measures from the aria "Si les filles d'Arles sont reines" from Gounod's opera "Mireille," signed by one of the great stars of the English and world opera and concert stages for more than half a century, beginning in 1857. He was closely identified with the title role in Mendelssohn's Elijah, which he first performed in 1858. Santley, whose sister Kate Santley was herself a musical and comedy star, wrote four books, two of them autobiographical. In 1907 he became the first singer to be knighted.


Neatly penned in blue ink on a slip printed with a quotation from Shakespeare. Laid down on pink backing paper with slight wrinkling, but otherwise in fine condition. 9.7 x 7.6 cm. (12700)
