De Monroy went to Mexico as a young Spanish missionary, and became Bishop of Michoacan. Later, he was Archbishop of Santiago de Santiago de Compostela, in Spain, while simultaneously serving as the General of the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans) from 1677 - 1686. This liturgical handbook was produced for his members during his term of office. The liturgical chants are arranged on red 4-line staves with the black square notation of plainsong. Niccolo Billy was a famed Italian engraver in the 17th century. Depicted, among others, in the copperplate title is a bishop, the Virgin Mary and Child, several tonsured Dominicans, an angel (?), a dog carrying a burning brand, and what appears to be a snake coming out of a chalice.
