The composer and organist Auguste Durand (1830-1909), a classmate of Cesar Franck and Camille Saint-Saëns at the Paris Conservatoire, founded the publishing house of Durand in 1869. His son Jacques (1865-1928), also a composer, assumed control of the company after his father's death in 1909. Over its long history, the company published most of the most important French composers of the era, including Saint-Saëns, Fauré, D’Indy, Debussy, Dukas, Ropartz, Roussel, Schmitt, Ravel, Milhaud, Poulenc, Duruflé, Jolivet and Messiaen.

Lucien Garban (1877-1959) was an important arranger and transcriber of the works of Debussy and Ravel, as well as a proofreader for Durand & Cie. Close colleagues, Jacques Durand and Lucien Garban were also both friends of Maurice Ravel.  (12390)
