Autograph Musical Quotation from “Werther.”
AMQS on an off-white page measuring 9 x 6.5 cm. The composer has penned a short quotation of three notes marked "Lento," and with the text "Les Larmes" from Acte 3 of "Werther," signing "Massenet / Paris / 95." Significant block of toning, but otherwise fine.Massenet's Werther is thrilling, tuneful, and one of the saddest operas ever composed — it ends with a suicide on Christmas Eve. It was first performed in Vienna, on February 16, 1892. (12349)
