Halftone photograph boldly signed by the great pianist/composer with his name alone in fountain pen ink. Tipped to a biographical folder advertising The Progressive Series of Piano Lessons, otherwise fine. Godowsky is very scarce in signed photographs. 4.5 x 6 inches, tipped to slightly larger mount.


Godowsky was one of the most highly regarded performers of his day. Born to Jewish parents Anna and Maciej Godowsky in Zosle, which is now part of Lithuania but was Russian territory when Godowsky was born, he was composing music by age 5 and showed emerging proficiency at piano and violin. He was largely self-taught, and began concert performances at age 9. He moved to the United States and performed in Boston in 1884. (12220)
