Publicity photograph from 'Delicious' - INSCRIBED BY IRA

Glossy doubleweight original photograph of George and Ira Gershwin and Guy Bolton, inscribed by Ira Gershwin "Greetings to Max / From / That Snappy Trio Of The West / 12/22/30." The image was used in publicity for "Delicious," the 1931 Gershwin musical romantic comedy film starring Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell, written by Guy Bolton and Sonya Levien and directed by David Butler. 8 x 10 inches. Fine.

The photograph is likely inscribed to the Austrian-born American composer of music for theatre and films, Max Steiner, who six years prior had been Co-Musical Director for "Lady, Be Good," based on material by Bolton and of course, with music and lyrics by the Gershwins.

"Delicious" features the introduction of Rhapsody in Rivets, later expanded into the Second Rhapsody by Gershwin, an imaginative and elaborate set piece. Gershwin also contributed other sequences for the score, but only a five-minute dream sequence called The Melting Pot and the six-minute Rhapsody in Rivets made the final cut. Fox Film Corporation rejected the rest of the score. (11851)
