Rare signed original Bendel of Moscow photograph of the Bolshoi prima ballerina, signed and inscribed to Florence Farmborough. In crisp, fine condition. 6.75 x 10.4 inches [17 x 26.5 cm].

Daughter of the famous Russian dancer Vasily Geltzer, she worked with Marius Petipa, Sergei Diaghilev, and Reinhold Glière. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, she helped to preserve the art of ballet in Russia and was the first ballet dancer to receive the title of "People's Artist of Russia" (1925).

Florence Farmborough (1887-1978) lived in Russia from 1908 to 1917. On the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 she worked as a Red Cross nurse in the Russian army. During this time she became a photographer and worked as correspondant for The Times and BBC. (11691)
