Ormandy, Eugene. (1899–1985)

Used and Signed Baton

A concert-used and signed baton from the conductor who led the Philadelphia Orchestra for 40 years. In fine condition, accompanied by a signed photograph (in only good condition - also please note that photograph is sold unframed), a 1975-76 Philadelphia Orchestra brochure with Ormandy and Rubinstein, as well as a Verdi Requiem program from the Muti-conducted Philadelphia Orchestra memorial concert for Ormandy,May 12, 1985. From the collection of a well-known patron of the Philadelphia Orchestra, who assembled a large collection of concert-used batons (his collection also included older examples not obtained in person) of many makes and models.

It is well known that most conductors use many different types of batons for different types of scores and at different periods of their careers. In our review of Ormandy's baton preferences, we have located at least four notably different models visible in Ormandy's hands in photographs, and of course Ormandy is also known to have regularly conducted without any baton at all. We sell the present example as having been hand signed by Ormandy, and as coming from a collection of visibly used batons (an image of which is available on request).  (11612)
