[Stradivari, Antonio. (1644 - 1737)] Reiner, Fritz. (1888-1963)

Original Photograph of Reiner holding the Betts Strad

Original vintage silver print photograph, measuring approximately 7.25 x 9.5. The legendary conductor is pictured here holding the famous Betts Stradivarius, a pencil notation on verso explaining: "Mr. Rudolph [Wurlitzer] showing the Betts Stradivarius - just acquired by him - to Mr. Fritz Reiner and E. B. in Cincinnati..." With scattered surface marks, trimmed edges and a clipped lower right bottom corner, this photograph is in very good condition.

The Betts Stradivarius violin was made in 1704 and has been owned by the French violin maker Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume and London instrument dealers W.E. Hill & Sons. The instrument is currently in the collection of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., among the four other Stradivaris in the Cremonese Collection donated by Gertrude Clarke Whittall in 1935.
