Brodsky, Adolph. (1851 - 1929)

Autograph Signatures

Signed page of the second Brodsky Quartet, featuring the famed Russian violinist Adolph Brodsky, together with Rawdon Briggs, Simon Speelman, and Carl Fuchs, all of whom have signed in an unusual criss-crossed fashion. This version of the Quartet was formed in the late 1890s while Brodsky was in Manchester teaching at the Royal Manchester College of Music and directing the Hallé Orchestra. The page is signed below with what appears to be an abreviated and hurried signature of the conductor Hans Richter, a close associate of Brodsky. 15.5 x 19 cm.

On December 4, 1881, Brodsky premiered Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major in Vienna, under the baton of Hans Richter. Brodsky was the dedicatee of the concerto, after Tchaikovsky decided to withdraw the dedication from Leopold Auer, offended that the latter would not to play it unless the composer made certain changes incorporating his unsolicited suggestions. Later, Carl Fuchs asked Elgar to compose a string quartet for the Brodsky Quartet and in 1918, Elgar completed his String Quartet in E minor, Op. 83 and dedicated it to the quartet. (11552)
