Ravel, Maurice. (1875-1937)

Signed Portrait

Portrait signed and inscribed "Maurice Ravel London 18/10/23," being a 4to printed reproduction of the drawing by Ouvré showing Ravel at the piano, on the cover of the programme for the Ravel Festival at the Queen's Hall, 18 October 1923. The programme of 4 leaves, stapled, minor wear, moutning remnants along the left verso edge.

If Ernest Newman's weekly column in the Sunday Times is to be believed, the festival was not a great success: "Some eager and imaginative journalists...waxed very wroth over the 'Ravel Festival' fiasco of last Thursday. Why was Queen's Hall more than half empty? they asked...The truth is that modern French music as a whole has failed, in spite of the most energetic propaganda, to win its way into the heart of the ordinary British music-lover."

Signed portraits of Ravel are highly uncommon. (11549)
