Strauss, Richard. (1864–1949) [Kolb, Alois. (1875–1942)]

Large Signed Portrait Engraving

Attractive early signed engraved portrait of the great composer/conductor shown at the podium, boldly signed "Richard Strauss" in pencil and dated 4/15/1928 in the lower blank margin and signed and titled just under the plate by the artist. Attractively matted and framed.  Some toning and fading throughout, light creases and small damage to lower edge of the large sheet; overall in fine condition.  Sight area measures an impressive 24" x 17.5" and frame is 35" x 28" x 1" overall.

The Austrian etcher, painter and graphic artist Alois Kolb worked as an illustrator for Jugend and was a professor of graphic art and book design at the Leipzig Academy for Graphic Arts and Bookmaking. He had a lifelong preoccupation with music and is perhaps best known for his cycles of etchings devoted to Beethoven and Strauss.  See also Schubertiade item 10090 for a fine example of Kolb's early hexagonal Beethoven portrait, "Der Kuss" (https://www.schubertiademusic.com/items/details/10090-beethoven-ludwig-van-%E2%80%93-kolb-alois-%E2%80%93-original-large-engraving-der-kuss). A related image by Kolb of Strauss at the podium is dated 1924, presumably the same year as the present work.  (11439)
