Original Self-Portrait Drawing and Autograph Signature

Original self-portrait drawing by the composer, accomplished in pencil and archivally matted with an autograph signature clipped from a check. 4.25 x 6 sheet of telephone message paper; and a fountain pen signature, “George Gershwin,” on an off-white 4 x 1 slip clipped from a check. In overall fine condition. 8 x 10 inches overall.


Gershwin was an enthusiastic amateur artist as well as an avid art collector. In his biography of the composer, Edward Jablonski relates that Ira Gershwin collected various signatures and doodles from his brother and would frame them with Gershwin's checks and present them to friends (p. 368).
