The Belgian art critic, writer, and lawyer Octave Maus (1856 - 1919) founded the weekly L'Art moderne in 1881 and in 1884 Maus was elected the secretary of the recently formed arts group "Les XX." There was a close tie between art, music and literature among the Les XX artists. During the exhibitions, there were literary lectures and discussions, and performances of new classical music, which from 1888 were organized by Vincent d'Indy. Fauré participated frequently in concerts organized by Les XX starting that year, in which an entire "matinée supplémentaire" was devoted to his works and at which he performed on the piano.
