Variant first edition of the Piano and Vocal score, this copy signed at the head of the title "L. Bolly," with his markings in pencil throughout, and with a laid-in complete program from a 9 January, 1881 performance ("12me Concert du Chatelet" ) of the work conducted by Ed. Colonne and featuring Bolly in the role of the Récitant. Blue cloth, Bolly stamped at lower spine, edges fraying, signatures loose and shaken. Hopkinson 56D (a).


The series of performances at which this score was used was documented by Berlioz's close friend and perhaps his staunchest supporter in the press (Journal des débats), the French opera composer Ernest Reyer (1823 - 1909). In his review (FEUILLETON DU JOURNAL DES DÉBATS, 30 January, 1881), he singles out Bolly for his fine performance: "Mais voici un jeune débutant dont je lisais le nom pour la première fois sur un programme de concert, et qui m’a fort surpris par la façon tout à fait remarquable dont il a chanté la partie du Récitant, par l’accent de naïveté mystique qu’il a donné au premier air surtout qui est une des pages les plus délicieuses, les plus caractéristiques de l’ouvrage. Ce débutant, qui n’a la voix ni très forte ni très étendue, se nomme M. Bolly, et il est élève du Conservatoire. Je lui fais mon sincère compliment, et, tout jeune qu’il est, je pourrais le citer comme exemple à plus d’un chanteur expérimenté." (11270)
