Grove, George. (1820 - 1900)

Autograph Letter Suggesting Turgenev Novels, though "A lady can't read most French novels..."

An interesting letter from the founding editor of Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians and the first director of the Royal College of Music. On Lower Sydenham headed notepaper dated 'Wh[it] Sunday 1892' to Mrs Bagshawe: “One line to thank you and Dr Bagshawe for your kind hospitality on Saturday; and also to tell the the name of the book I recommended to you. It is called 'Journal d'un officier d'ordonnance - per le Comte d'Herrison.' It is a little 3.50 vol. published in Paris, and I should(?) recommend also the 'second journal' by the same. They are wonderfully interesting & readable. A lady can't read most French novels; but if your friend wants to read one or two let her get: 'Peres et Enfants', 'Une nichee de gentils hommes' and 'Les reliques vivantes', they are all by Tourguenef and are beautiful." Letter written on first 2 sides of 4. Together with the original envelope. Fine. (11196)
