Autograph Letter about the 7th Symphony

Elusive autograph signed letter and envelope from the influential Austrian composer and organist who writes regarding the world premiere of his 7th Symphony. Autograph material of any kind from Bruckner is extremely rare. Sold together with a vintage postcard photograph.

1 page, double-sheet, 8vo. Dated "15.1.1885". To the composer Alfred Stross, envelope postmarked Vienna. In fine condition, tiny tears to two edges, envelope torn along the right edge. Tranlsated:

"Dear, good friend! I've found NO publisher. When you write to Prof. Winterberger, you will want to ask him for the theme in B minor that he gave me in the Gewandhaus. Thank you for your support, dear noble friend. Your / Bruckner," and adding a postscript "Special edition from Monday was terrible. The German newspaper by Wed. very good."

The composer is referencing reviews of his 7th Symphony which was first perormed on December 30, 1884. The premiere, given under Arthur Nikisch and the Gewandhaus Orchestra in the opera house at Leipzig brought Bruckner the greatest success he had known in his life. The Symphony was eventually published by Gutmann in 1885.

Alexander Winterberger (1834 - 1914) was an organist and composer who had been one of Liszt's earliest pupils. (10853)
