Igor Stravinsky was fast approaching 80 years in 1960. The Russian composer had delighted audiences with The Firebird, and shocked them with The Rite of Spring. He had served as an inspiration to a crop of American jazz musicians and solidified himself as a leader of the neoclassical aesthetic. But for all his cultural impact, popularity and extensive travel, by 1960 he had yet to appear on American television. That changed during a Jan. 31 appearance on the CBS program “The Creative Performer,” hosted by Leonard Bernstein and also featuring soprano Eileen Farrell and pianist Glenn Gould. It was the legendary composer's first such TV appearance. (10732)
