[Literature & Art] Brassaï [Gyula Halasz] (1899-1984)

"Choeur des élèves de l'académie Religeuse a Paris" - Original Photograph

Vintage silver gelatin photograph, 1936. Titled and dated on the verso in blue ink and stamped "Brassai. 81, Rue Du Faub St. Jacques Paris XIV..." 9 1/4 " x 11 1/2" [23.5 x 29 cm]. Corners nicked, light diagonal crease upper right, a few light surface creases and small crack upper middle.

One of the most renowned photographers of the interwar period, Brassaï's reputation rests on contributions to both commercial and avant-garde photography. His long-time friend, the author Henry Miller, nicknamed him "The Eye of Paris" for his devotion to the city, and he was close to many of its artists. His enduring relationship with Picasso in particular yielded many famous portraits of the artist, as well as important books. (10620)
