Special Van Vechten Tribute issue of The American Record Guide - SIGNED BY VAN VECTHEN

The American Record Guide, Vol. 26, No. 10 1960 (June 1960). The issue includes a "Tribute to Van Vechten" (pp.776-777) by the Editor, James Lyons: "Evviva Carlo," on the occasion of his 80th birthday, the final page of which features a recent photograph taken of C. V. V. by Paul Mascriber, above which Van Vechten has signed and inscribed "Dear Paul, this issue of this magazine in June 1960 was issued to honor my 75th birthday Much Affection, Carlo / June 16 1960 New York." The volume includes an appreciation of Van Vechten on his 80th birthday by Edward Jablonski ("Carlo Patriarch"), and an article by Van Vechten himself ("Why Music is Unpopular") including a photo spread of some of his remarkable images of musicians, composers, singers, critics including Bessie Smith, Lincoln Kirstein, W. C. Handy, George Antheil, Aaron Copland, Carlos Chavez, George Gershwin, Paul Robeson, Marian Anderson, Virgil Thomson etc.


Vechten was an important photographer of many subjects, including many figures of the Harlem Renaissance, and was the literary executor of Gertrude Stein. (10215)
