Wooden Tea Table from the Stravinsky Collection

Wooden tea table owned by the Stravinsky family, ca. late 18th/early19th c., likely acquired in California ca. 1940, where it was very much a part of daily life.  Stravinsky and his wife Vera used this table for their afternoon tea and patience games, as well as evening drinks.  Smoking accompanied all of these activities, and the cigarette burns scattered across the surface of the table were deliberately preserved when the table was refinished in 2009.  40 inches in diameter plus two nesting extension leaves. Album Amicorum from "El Retiro," the Santa Barbara residence of the wealthy socialites Pierre Clinch Merillon (1899–1991) and the Comtesse Michelle D'Oultremont (1904–1977) who were married in 1930 and whose home in Santa Barbara was a gathering place for luminaries living in or visiting CA.  Red leather with gold embossed florets and "The Open Door" to front cover, entries dated 1941–1949 on twenty-four sides, including several drawings and numerous autographs and inscriptions.  A page dated 1942 is signed by both Vera and Igor Stravinsky as well as Georgette and Arthur Sachs, among others.  The following page includes signatures of Nadia Boulanger (22 Sept 1942), as well as by Rosamond and William K. Vanderbilt, among others.  A boldly penned inscription from French poet, dramatist and diplomat Pierre Paul Claudel appears opposite a beautifully rendered watercolor of a flower by his wife Marion Cartier Claudel, daughter of Pierre Cartier of the three legendary Cartier brothers jewelry firm (signed "MC").  Other pages signed and inscribed by members of other wealthy and notable French families, including du Brissonay, Lalaing, Lustrac, as well as Hedwige Princesse de Bourbon, and many others.  Split along upper left cover, else in fine condition.  Approx. 5.5 x 7.75 inches (14 x 19.5 cm.).

Collection of photographs of and relating to the great composer from the collection of Miranda Levy, founding member of the Santa Fe Opera and wife of pioneering television director Ralph Levy. The collection includes a postcard photograph of Marino Marini's 1951 bust sculpture of Stravinsky, inscribed in red pencil "To Miranda / Igor Stravinsky" adding in blue pencil "Kisses in blue"; three original photographs taken during rehearsals for a 1957 production of The Rake's Progress at Sante Fe Opera in New Mexico (various sizes, largest 8 x 10 inches); original candid photograph of the composer's wife Vera Stravinsky; candid color polaroid photograph of the composer with friends taken in Venice, Italy in 1960.  Together with Typed Letter Signed from Janet Wells to Miranda Levy (January 26, 1984;  1 pp. on Congdon & Weed stationary) reading in part "Enclosed are the photographs of Stravinsky you loaned us for our forthcoming publication."  Overall in fine condition. Original signed 1936 advertisement for a series of joint recitals by the important composer and the violinist with whom he frequently performed and for whom he wrote his Violin Concerto (1931) and the Duo Concertante (1932). Signed and inscribed by both Stravinsky and Dushkin at the head. Reprinted from Musical America (February 1935 issue), the advertisement pictures Stravinsky and Dushkin looking at a score together, with various American press quotations printed below, and promotes their American series of joint recitals, held between January and April 1936. A beautiful bound volume of special issues and supplements to the Parisian theatrical periodical Comoedia Illustré chronicling the 1909–1921 seasons of the Ballets Russes, with many photographs and full-color illustrations relating to the legendary ballet company. A selection of souvenir programs (published as supplements to the magazine) and extracts from the magazine are arranged in chronological order; interspersed leaves with texts by V. Svetloff (Russian critic and biographer of Anna Pavlova) give further details of each year's productions. Ownership inscription of Osborne Robinson and exhibition loan details on front free endpaper, some marginal dust-soiling, original green silk-covered boards with pictorial inlay (from The Firebird) by Natalia Goncharova, rebacked in green morocco, modern clothGraphically interesting endpapers covered in the names of important Ballets Russes figures. Most pages unnumbered; over 200 pp. total. Four leaves with clipped and mounted prints and hand-written captions appear to be the addition of the previous owner, and are partially detached; binding otherwise sound.
