Autograph musical quotation from the important violinist and composer, who has penned the first four measures of the violin part from his piece Habanera (Spanish Dances no. 2, op. 21), signed and titled and dated December 1, 1887. Signed half-length photographic portrait of the great Spanish violinist standing with his instrument and bow in his hands.  Signature in pen with autograph date "8-11-95."  In contemporary well worn black metal frame, behind glass.  6 x 4.25 inches (15 x 10.5 cm).  Photograph slightly foxed and faded; handwriting not affected and clear.

A spirited portrait of the great violinist, a chromo-lithograph caricature published in the English weekly magazine Vanity Fair on May 25, 1889.  The artist Carlo Pellegrini, widely known as "Ape," was one of the most famous of the outstanding caricaturists who published in the magazine.  Small nick to upper left edge, strip of toning along top edge, else in fine condition. 10.5 x 15 inches (26.7 x 38.1 cm.).

Autograph Letter Signed arranging travel for Sarasate and Bouhy

ALS by the influential conductor to a M. Calandini, most likely the cellist of the Theatre Italien, regarding a series of errands and tasks to be completed, including arranging travel for several famous performers, including possibly Sarah Bernhardt, the violinist Pablo Sarasate, and Jacques-Joseph-André Boughy, Belgian baritone most famous for being the first to sing the "Toreador Song" in the role of Escamillo in the opera Carmen. Caen, May 25 [no year];  2 pp.  In French, translated in full: "I can't find the Egmont Orchestral score, stop by M. Richault [music publishing house founded in 1805 by Charles Simon Richault (1780-1866)] to look at it if you don't find any at the library.  It is a small size. / Madame Sarah [Bernhardt?], Sarasate and Bouhy are going to travel first class, it is likely that Bouhy will not leave in the morning, but you'll check Friday evening about the time of his departure. / You'll find enclosed the 1/2-price ticket.  Friday you'll go and ask a thousand francs from M. Charlier to pay the railroad.  It's 11f10c second class and 14.75 first class. / You haven't forgotten to stop by M. Gounod [?]. The bass players are M.M. Dereul...they must be brought to M. Dereul, 66 Notre Dame de Nazareth Street, also ask the name of the 1st bass player. / sending my salutations / J. A remarkable album of over 90 original concert programs, clippings, tickets and flyers chronicling musical performances in 1890's Brighton, London, and Germany, with a predominance of important pianists and violinists represented, as well as opera and theatre programs, and a ticket to the Wagner Nights. Highlights of the performers represented include Emil Sauer, Ignace Paderewski, Pablo de Sarasate, Joseph Joachim, Nellie Melba, Adelina Patti, Emma Albani, and Henry Irving. Many of the programs with notes from the collector; the album is signed by the collector, Sybil Mary Curtis, on the front pastedown, and dated January 3, 1896. Heavy wear to the binding, with spine and boards largely detached; toning. Most programs laid down to the pages, with some loosely laid in. Unbound upright folio. 13.5 x 10.75 inches (34.5 x 27.5 cm).  Engraved.  PN 18377 No. 1 and 18377 No. 2. Each volume 2-31 pp. First edition but later issue (price in marks—after 1871; first issue was in 1865). Hand stamps of G. Schirmer, New York, and "Gemünder Gibson" to both title pages. Fingerings, bowing marks, corrections, etc. in pencil, all in the same hand and in French. Repairs with plastic tape to outer bifolia of both volumes. Edwardian Album of Postcard Photographs

Wonderful collection of 35 Edwardian and Georgian postcard portraits, mostly of violinists but also including some composers, conductors, and other musicians of the era, all tipped into pages of a green souvenir album with a raised four leaf clover design to the cover.  The majority are postcard photographs, though a few are decorated with illustrations or caricatures. Individuals represented here include Oskar Back, Ole Bull, John Dull, Spencer Dyke, Marie Hall (2), Lady Hallé (2), the Hambourg Brothers, two postcard photographs and a halftone photograph of Joseph Joachim, Jaroslav Kocián, Fritz Kreisler, Jan Kubelík (6), Pablo de Sarasate, Emil Sauer & Willy Burmester, an etching of Antonio Stradivari, three postcard photographs and a caricature of Cesar Thomson, Auguste van Biene, Antoine van Heck (2), Henri Vieuxtemps, Franz von Vécsey, Henryk Wieniawski, August Wilhelmj, and Eugène Ysaÿe, together with one unidentified individual.  Separation to album spine interior, general signs of wear, overall in fine condition.  Postcards generally in fine condition and most not postally cancelled or otherwise marked.  7.75 x 10 inches (19.7 x 25.4 cm.).
