“Songs from Irving Berlin’s ‘Alexander’s Ragtime Band" - SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY

Bound music book entitled, “Songs from Irving Berlin’s ‘Alexander’s Ragtime Band,’” 9 x 12, 180 pages, signed and inscribed on the second free end page, “To Phyllis Arthur, best wishes from Irving Berlin.” Autographic condition: fine, with some light toning and soiling to signed page. Brownish-grey paper covers with a cloth-covered spine; front sunned; creasing to edges (mostly at corners); spine-edges rubbed, with several tears in cloth; cloth at spine-tail folded up; slightly yellowed and soiled. In a very nice custom-made brown cloth-covered case with a black leather title piece and beautiful marbled paper lining.

Typed letter signed from the great American songwriter dated October 30, 1957, responding to a letter from a Miss May Patterson about Army band members in World War I: "As I recall, I was one of a committee assigned to purchase band music for the overseas bands. Unfortunately, I have no information regarding any of the alumni... In closing, let me say that your letter brought back many memories of the First World War." On his letterhead and with the original envelope with "Irving Berlin's 'Sayonara'" stamp; some thumbtack holes but overall in fine condition. 7.25 x 10.5 inches (18.3 x 26.5 cm).

DS, three pages, 8.5 x 11, June 6, 1943. Between Loew's Incorporated and the great composer and lyricist who consents to the use of his name “in the lyrics of a song entitled ‘I Like To Recognize The Tune’ written by Richard Rodgers and Larry Hart…to be used in connection with your photoplay tentatively entitled, ‘Meet the People.” The document goes on to quote the lyrics in full, with the verse mentioning Porter reading: “We murder the music of Mozart / We’re poison to Irving Berlin / We always slaughter the tunes of Cole Porter / And do it again and again.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Porter.
