A very striking original press photograph of the great tenor lying in state, with a young boy looking down into the coffin. Press caption on the verso reads (translated from the German): "In honor of Caruso's memory, his body, which was embalmed at the time of his death and is wonderfully preserved, is dressed every three years in the latest fashion. Unusual full color lithograph reproduction of a self portrait caricature in Meyerbeer's Le Prophète, by the great tenor and talented caricaturist, here shown in profile and signed to a light area in ink "Enrico Caruso / N.Y. 1918." The caricature is contained in a fabulous decorative gold lithographic frame. Two horizontal creases and small tears and creases to edges, else fine. 9.5 x 11 inches (24 x 28 cm). Attractive postcard Mishkin photograph of the great tenor in costume for "Manon." Boldly signed and inscribed: "To Miss Everett D. Farr Enrico Caruso Havana 1920," 5.25 x 3.25 inches. Some silvering to the photograph, but with the inscription and signature very bold and sold together with the original transmissal envelope, addressed in Caruso's hand and postmarked from "Habana, Cuba."

A rare and amusing postcard printed with a joke about the 1906 scandal surrounding the great tenor. Printed on the cover is the question "Where did Caruso touch the lady?"; a window in the cover opens to show a monkey in a cage with the punchline, "In the monkey house." Two Early-Twentieth-Century Opera Albums including Early Programs and Photographs of Important Strauss and Wagner Productions

Two interesting albums of opera programs, photographs, and clippings from England and Germany dating from 1902 to 1931, featuring important early Strauss performances and with with a particular focus on Wagner's operas, the collection including original programs from several summers of the Bayreuth Festspiele in 1906-1911, as well as many Wagnerian and other programs from Covent Garden and Dresden. Of particular interest are the programs for a very early (November 22, 1912) performance of the first version of Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos and for its London premiere in 1913; a 1913 Königliches Opernhaus Der Rosenkavalier broadside program and 6 original postcard photographs, featuring some of the role creators, including Margarethe Siems (originator of Marschallin); two 1912 Königliches Opernhaus Ariadne auf Naxos broadsides, featuring several important creators including Margarethe Siems (originator of Zerbinetta).  Some of the other featured performers/conductors include Hans Richter, Enrico Caruso, Olive Fremstad, Ernest van Dyck, Emmy Destinn, Marcel Journet, Victor Maurel, Pasquale Amato, Minnie Saltzmann-Stevens, Rudolf Berger, Erik Schmedes, Felix von Kraus, Albert Coates, Artur Bodanzky, Minnie Nast, Josef Pauli, Hans Rudiger, Wilhelm Herold etc. Wear and chips to the lower edge of the Dresden programs (which are slightly too large for the album); general light age wear and toning; albums with spines somewhat rubbed, but structurally sound; overall most items in very good to fine condition. Albums measure 10.5 x 15 x 1.25 inches (27 x 37.5 x 3 cm) and 12 x 16.5 x 1.5 inches (30 x 41.5 x 4 cm). Read More...

Signed Calling Card

Calling card signed by the Italian soprano discovered by Oscar Hammerstein I who became well-known in the US for her roles in serious and comic opera and her courtship with Enrico Caruso.  Trentini has signed on a small calling card, with slight spotting and mounting remnants on the verso, otherwise in fine condition.  7.1 x 4.9 cm.

Signed self-portrait sketch from the Italian bass who debuted at La Scala in 1924 and also performed around Europe; in the model of Enrico Caruso, he was a talented caricaturist. He has sketched himself in profile on a sheet of letterhead from the Grand Hotel in Vienna, signed below and dated August 2, 1934. A clipped halftone photograph has been added at the lower left. Some light toning and foxing at the corners; overall fine. 5 x 7.25 inches (13 x 18.6 cm).
