Hujar, Peter. (1934 - 1987) [Hay, Deborah. (b. 1941)]. Deborah Hay In Hammock. Gelatin silver print photograph by the great American photographer best known for his black and white portraits, showing American dancer Deborah Hay reclining in a hammock, ca. 1969.  Framed under Plexiglas; 25.5 x 21.75 inches (63.8 by 55.3 centimeters). Sheet measures 17 x 14 inches (43.2 by 35.5 centimeters).

This work is in good condition overall. The sheet is cornered to the backing board; overall gently rippled and there is overall soiling to the reverse. The margin is lightly soiled and there is wear to the edges of the sheet, not visible when framed. There are scattered soft creases throughout, visible under raking light and upon close inspection. There is a very sharp crease that runs the length of the print, which appears to break the emulsion. There is another 5 inch crease at the right lower edge of the print that appears to break the emulsion. There is a 1 inch jigsaw shaped scratch at the center right edge that appears to break the emulsion.

One of the founding members of the Judson Dance Theater, Deborah Hay is an experimental choreographer working in the field of postmodern dancePeter Hujar has been recognized posthumously as "one of the major American photographers of the late twentieth century," and "among the greatest American photographers."
