The music publisher Johann Michel Götz (1740-1810) established himself in Mannheim in 1773 with his own publishing program and in 1776 "was granted an exclusive privilege of music printing in the Palatinate, which was subsequently extended to Bavaria following the elector's move to Munich. The great majority of Götz's editions were taken from recent publications in Paris, Vienna and other places....Götz curiously took no advantage of Mozart's visit to Mannheim in 1778-9 to obtain works from him. The first of his Mozart publications (all of which were taken from other publishers' editions) was of the piano sonatas K. 309-311."
