Kral, Johann Nepomuk. (1839–1896) & Mates, Franz. (1831–1873) etc.. Heitere Spenden / Tanz-Album / Auf das Jahr / 1860 / für Pianoforte. Pilsen [Plzen]: Carl Maasch. 1860. First Edition.
Compilation of six dances for piano by different composers. Disbound upright quarto. Engraved, with lithographic title. [PN] 1. 29 pp. Lithographed/engraved by Röder, Leipzig. 13 x 10.15 inches (32.7 x 26 cm). Slightly foxed; damp stained to foot. Spine rebacked. In very good condition overall. No further copies known. Contents:

1. Friedrich Hingst, Marien-Walzer
2. Eduard Kaiser, Soldanellen-Quadrille
3. Johann N. Kral, Telegrafen-Galopp
4. Joseph Gerlach, Emilien-Polka (tremblante)
5. Franz Mates, Schneeglöckchen-Polka-Mazur
6. Friedrich Hingst, Preference-Polka-Francaise

The title "Heitere Spenden... auf das Jahr 1860" ("cheerful donations... for the year 1860") suggest that this publication was for the benefit of some charitable cause and the dances were specifically composed for it. The composers are not mentioned in standard reference works. Johann Nepomuk Kral, born in Mainz, Germany, established himself as a military band leader in Austria; he died in Tulln on the Danube. Franz Mathes worked as a singing teacher in Klattau (now Klatový), Bohemia, not far from Pilsen. It can be safely assumed that the other composers, about whom nothing else is known, assembled here were also from the area. The dedication to the wife of the local "Statthaltereirath und Kreishauptmann" (approximately, "Steward councillor and county executive") also points to a local undertaking.
