Weber, Carl Maria von. (1786–1826). Ouverture zur grossen romantischen Oper Euryanthe, für das Pianoforte eingerichtet.... Vienna: S. A. Steiner und Comp:. [1824]. Titelauflage of First Edition.

Piano reduction of the overture.  Disbound oblong quarto.  [PN] S: u: C: 4520. 12 pp.  Engraved.  Handstamp of J. Ewer & Co, London, and handwritten note in ink to left of it to foot of title (both partly cut off, latter indecipherable).  Numbers in pencil throughout indicating system breaks for a new edition with six systems per page, probably in upright format.  9 x 12.5 inches (23 x 31.5 cm). Vertical fold in center, damp stained to spine and somewhat soiled, but overall in very good condition.

The markup for a new edition is intriguing. Upright format was standard in London. The Ewer hand stamp proves that the present copy made its way there. At this point, however, no edition of the overture, whether by Ewer or any other publisher, has been identified in which the system breaks were realized as indicated here.

Euryanthe, first performed in Vienna in 1823, was Weber's most ambitious opera and his only one without spoken dialogue. Richard Wagner was deeply impressed with it, and it may have influenced his Lohengrin in particular. However, Euryanthe's libretto, by Helmina von Chézy, is generally considered inadequate, which prevented the opera from entering the repertory.
