Sartori Vol.III, p.77; Sonneck p.460.

It was Peri who composed La Dafne, which is considered the first opera in the history of it: only one copy is known of the first edition (1597). L’Euridice is the second opera to have been composed and, as we have stated above, the first in which the music survives. It was premiered on 6th October 1600 as part of the wedding celebrations in honour of Henry IV, King of France and Maria Medici. Not long after that, the copyright in the work was transferred to the firm that became Debussy's regular publisher,Durand of Paris, who in 1905 rather surprisingly reissued the 1902 vocal score unaltered save for the substitution of their own name for that of Fromont....It was not until 1907, however, that Durand brought out the familiar 320-page second editoin of the vocal score, with parallel French and English texts. When in June 1790 Mozart himself said the task was still 'troublesome,' he was surely alluding partly to the imbalance that had been caused by the need to give some prominence to the cello, and to his own innovaions of texture and emphasis, much weight being given to the finales. The three quartets which he completed are the D major, K. 575, entered in his catalogue in June 1789; the Bb major, K. 589, entered in May 1790; and the F major, K. 590, entered in June 1790." (Alec Hyatt King, "Mozart Compendium" (Landon), p. 296)

The quartets were first published by Artaria in Vienna, just after Mozart's death and shortly before the present edition.
Poulenc, Francis. This item's main interest is the printing here of the winning entry in this final category, a motet for four choirs ("S. Cecilia ora pro nobis" ) by the Italian composer Marco Santucci (1762-1843). The work was a unanimous selection because it was seen as manifesting an entirely new combination of voices. (Subsequently, energetic protests were raised against this judgment, based on the assertion that Santucci's type of polyphonic writing was common in works by Italian composers in the 16th and 17th centuries). Katalog der Sammlung Anthony van Hoboken, Band 10, no. 236; James Fuld, The Book of World-Famous Music, fifth edition, 2000, p. 633.

This set of parts illustrates a fascinating early performance history and also illustrates at least two layers of very interesting provenance. Many of the parts are signed with the initials “A.G.” and some also include handwritten dates from the 1850s. It is possible that these initials are those of the violinist and conductor Adolphe Ganz (1795-1869), who was an intimate of the Mendelssohn family and who conducted in London at Her Majesty's Theatre from 1851. All the parts are bound in brown paper wrappers with the instrument and title (“Sommernachtstraum Von Mendelssohn”) and “Pofs: Th: Baker” written in fine ink script on the wrapper cover. Though the parts clearly show a performance history predating these wrappers, the set eventually became part of the library of Theodore Baker (1851-1934), American writer on music and the compiler of the 1st edition of “Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians” (1900). Baker was the author of numerous books on music, including the first serious study of American Indian music, and was for many years the literary editor and translator for the publishing house of G. Schirmer.

Violino Imo.: Printed Title, as above; Verso with laid-in manuscript edition of six lines, “Opening of Scene (immediately after Overture). Maestoso for 7 bars, followed by a section marked “Allegro Molto,” both in the key of E-Major. The printed score opens on the following page (1) with No. 1 “Scherzo,” and the Overture was printed separately from this edition. The present manuscript addition at the score's outset is a very abbreviated summary of the musical material of the true Overture, though the note at its head indicates it was to be played after the Overture; 6 of the following 19 pages include similar laid-in manuscript additions, ranging in length from 1-9 lines and also including several sections which have been covered over with blank sheet of paper to indicate cuts. The music has also been annotated in ink at the head of several numbers to indicate which Act was being performed.

Violino Imo. Mascagni apparently had not heard of the competition until only two months before its closing date, but found his librettists and completed the work in time for submission on the final day of the competition. The opera won and was first performed in Rome at the Teatro Costanzi on May 17, 1890 with Mascagni apparently taking 40 curtain calls on opening night. It has since remained one of the most beloved of all Italian operas, frequently paired in a so-called "Cav/Pag" double-bill with Leoncavallo's Pagliacci.
Blake, Eubie.
