Early signed Nasib of New York photograph of the legendary jazz singer, who is shown in a glamorous and stylishly lit head-and-shoulders pose, and who has signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "Best always to Paul from Billie Holiday.” Handsomely cloth-matted and framed to an overall size of 14.5 x 16.5; a photocopy of the photo's Music Corporation of America label, concealed by the frame's backing, is affixed to the reverse. In very good to fine condition, with two small edge tears, and scattered creasing, primarily to the right side.

Revered as one of the greatest and most individual vocalists in the history of blues and jazz, Holiday died from cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 44. Signed photographs of her are very scarce.

The photographer Nasib Kopooshian (1890-1945) was a theatrical photographer known in the trade as NASIB and this photograph dates from the late 1930s when his studio was located at 160 West 46th Street. The Music Corporation of America caption mounted verso, advertises Billie Holiday in concert with Count Basie and his orchestra, permitting us to date the image to the brief period in 1937-8 when Billie toured with Basie's band.
