Garland, Judy. (1922–1969). "For Me and My Gal" - Signed Photograph.

Signed promotional still of the American singer and actress in the 1942 MGM musical. 10.25 x 8 inches (25.9 x 20.1 cm).  Corners worn, small ink smudge to left curtain area, else in fine condition.

Directed by Busby Berkeley, For Me and My Gal marked the first real 'adult' role for the nineteen-year-old Judy Garland, who had played juvenile parts until then, most notably in The Wizard of Oz (1938).  "For this film, Berkeley worked under unusual circumstances: supervised by the iron-willed producer Arthur Freed, he was barred from creating any production numbers in his familiar styles. On the other hand, Berkeley had the benefit of an exceptionally gifted pair of lead actors, Gene Kelly (in his first movie) and Judy Garland (who, at twenty, had her first full romantic leading role). In lieu of creating kaleidoscopic complexities on the set to conjure philosophical abstractions regarding his obsessive themes of sex and society, Berkeley found and stoked those inner tangles and whirls of ideas and emotions in the performances of his stars." (Richard Brody, New Yorker Magazine, Feb. 29, 2016, "The Front Row: 'For Me and My Gal'”)

From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
