Primrose, William. (1903-1982). Original Set of Photograph Negatives.

A very unusual and interesting set of eight original film negatives of the leading violist of his time, a member of the London String Quartet and the NBC Symphony under Toscanini before embarking on an unprecedented successful solo career as violist. Primrose is shown leaning on the propeller of a small plane and around airplanes, playing his instrument, and also including an image of a female family member at home. 4 x 5 inches (10 x 12.7 cm).

"Teaching in three widely separated parts of the globe keeps Mr. Primrose in planes a lot. 'A long time ago I was afraid to fly,' he said, 'so I became a pilot to conquer my fear. It worked. When I was teaching in Los Angeles, I used to fly a lot on my own, in order to get above the smog and polluted air there. I still pilot a plane occasionally. I love the flights from the West Coast to Japan and Australia, but the more you know about flying the more you know how much can go wrong.'" ("Music Notes: A Peripatetic Violist," NYT 11/18/79)
