Very fine vintage silver gelatin photograph of the American writer, impresario, art connoisseur, and cultural figure in New York City who, with George Balanchine, founded the New York City Ballet (first known as the "Ballet Society") in 1948. Photographer's blindstamped credit  lower left "Photograph by Carl Van Vechten". Credit wet stamp on verso: "Photograph by Carl Van Vechten 146 Central Park West Cannot be Reproduced without Permission". Inscribed in pen on verso: "IX VV 17 November 17 1964". 9.5 x 8 inches (20 x 24 cm). A couple of light scratches and nicks along the right edge, else fine.
