Having seen Reinhardt's riveting production of Hofmannsthal's Elektra in the autumn of 1905 Strauss was convinced the play would make a compelling opera. Not entirely sure he should compose consecutive tragedies he nonetheless gave in to Hofmannsthal's pleading and vigorously began composing Elektra in the summer of 1906. As he had with Oscar Wilde's Salome he set the play to music which was finished in 1908 and given its première in 1909 as part of a Strauss opera festival in Dresden. Elektra failed to outshine her flashier sister but confirmed Strauss's pre-eminence among German opera composers." (Bryan Gilliam in Grove Music Online)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0512/4826/7423/files/Strauss_2C_Richard_Op._58_Elektra_179b.jpg?v=1722185875
183-strauss-richard-der-rosenkavalier-op-59-vollstandiger-klavier-auszug
Strauss, Richard. Although Lanza had been told by Koussevitzy that "yours is a voice such as is heard once in a hundred years," and although the NY Times noted early on that he had "few equals among tenors of the day in terms of quality, warmth, and power," Lanza sang only in one staged opera, Madama Butterfly (New Orleans, 1948). He was the first singer to earn gold records with million-sellers in both classical and popular categories and Maria Callas called him "Caruso's successor." In 1973, Callas said that her "biggest regret" was "not having had the opportunity of singing with greatest tenor" she had ever heard. (1791-1861) Important Autograph Letter regarding La Muette de Portici.
From the French playwright and librettist, regarding the dress rehearsal and following day's premiere of Auber's La Muette de Portici, with the libretto by Scribe. 3pp ,8vo. Usual creases and one small tear, not affecting the text.

Addresed to Madame Panchouke, 28 February (no year, but 1829) this letter is written the day before the premiere of what is generally regarded as the earliest French grand opera, a milestone in opera history. In Scribe's colorful letter, declining a dinner invitation due to his required presence at the opera, he refers to the novelty of the undertaking in some length.

Scribe collaborated with nearly every major opera composer of his time in both France and Italy. His libretti were set by Verdi, Bellini, Auber, Halevy, Boieldieu, Donizetti, Rossini and Meyerbeer, for whom he was working on L'Africaine at the time of his death. Though Scribe wrote many important libretti, it may be argued that La Muette was his most important contribution, as many of its elements - the 5-act structure, the obligatory ballet sequence, the use of spectacular stage effects, the focus on romantic passions against a background of historical troubles - became standard features of the form after their introduction there.
Daumier, Honoré. Le Charivari, published from 1832 to 1937, was widely known for printing caricatures, political cartoons and reviews. After 1835, when the government banned political caricature, Le Charivari began publishing satires of everyday life.

In 1831, Daumier was engaged by Philipon to become a cartoonist for his newly founded journal of political satire, La Caricature. This launched him on a career of forty years as comic artist to the weekly press, during which he drew 3,958 lithographs before the onset of blindness in the 1870s put a stop to his work. The initial target of his attacks was the government of King Louis-Philippe, which he ridiculed with a corrosive wit that brought him to the notice of the press police and earned him a jail term of six months in 1832. He nevertheless continued to draw for La Caricature and for another of Philipon's journals, Le Charivari, developing, in the heat of weekly combat, a graphic style of unsurpassed brilliance in an art that in France had little prestige. When a tightening of censorship in 1835 put an end to La Caricature, Daumier shifted to politically unobjectionable social satire for Philipon's other journal, Le Charivari. In hundreds of lithographs, published serially, two or three a week, he turned a sharp eye on the characteristic look and demeanor of every segment of Parisian society, ranging from the crotchets and timidities of the urban middle class with which he fondly empathized (Les Bons Bourgeois), to the frauds of speculators (Robert Macaire), the pomposities of lawyers (Gens de justice), the self-delusions of artists, the rapacity of landlords, and the vanity of bluestockings.
