The National Negro Opera Foundation was established in 1950 as a fundraising organization for the National Negro Opera Company, which existed from 1941 to 1962 and was the first African-American opera company in the United States. They were founded and run by Mary Cardwell Dawson (1894–1962). From the late 1940s, Dawson (and her organizations) were based in Washington, D.C. Both the opera company and the foundation ceased operations when Dawson died.
