An interesting and important collection of 97 authentic vintage shakuhachi music scores, together with three collections of folk songs (Zokkyoku-shu Vols.1-3 - min'yo sheet music) and one beginner instruction booklet for Tozan-ryu. From the formative years of Tozan-ryu shakuhachi pedagogy, with volumes published between 1919-1923 (Taisho 8-12), including original arrangements and compositions by Nakao Tozan, in the old Tozan-ryu notation system.

The shakuhachi is a Japanese longitudinal, end-blown flute that is made of bamboo, developed in Japan in the 16th century. Many of the pieces included here were arranged by Nakao Tozan himself including some early editions of his own compositions.  The founder of the most important school of shakuhachi playing in late-nineteenth to mid-twentieth-century Japan, Tozan was both a performer and prolific composer and his influence continues to the present day.

The individual compositions included cover the full spectrum of Tozan-ryu repertoire - from classical honkyoku adaptations to folk melodies, sankyoku, and new compositions, representing thus a comprehensive overview of early Tozan-ryu literature, invaluable for serious study, research or institutional collections.

In generally fine condition, with characteristic yellowing and varying degrees of foxing. All fold to B5 size (257mm x 182mm), mix of bifold, trifold, and quadrifold sheets printed in Japanese with traditional shakuhachi notation
