Solid patinated bronze statue based on the celebrated sculpture from the school of Praxiteles, ca. 330 - 325 BCE, depicting a youth, perhaps the god Hermes. Discovered in the sea of the Marathon bay in 1925, the original now resides in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. This fine reproduction acquired by our consignor ca. 1960 and likely of manufacture around that period. 24.8 x 17.7 inches; 63 x 45 cm. In fine condition.
The youth seems lost in thought and oblivious to the outside world. The union of the very beautiful head and the harmonious lines of the body show the inspiration and skill of a real artist. The movement of it is balanced, and tension has been added to it by the way in which the right arm stretches out.
