Drawing inspiration from the pulp comic of the same name, Tierra Brava traverses a personal psychological space within the color of a place mired in contradictions; the U.S. – Mexico border. It is a place that is in a constant search for its own sense of identity, juggling the traditions of culture and history of the interior with the pleasures and promises of prosperity and a better life of its northern neighbor. It is not Mexico and not the United States, but rather something and somewhere in-between.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePaul Turounet is an interdisciplinary artist working with photography, books and installation. His work has been exhibited in the United States and internationally, including the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona, the New Mexico State University Art Gallery, the Aperture Gallery in New York, Centro Cultural Tijuana in Mexico, and the Moscow House of Photography in Russia. He would renew these props every few years, which later allowed him to establish a chronology for his work. His archive of over 10,000 negatives was gradually brought to light in the early 1990s; Keïta has since achieved international recognition. Most recently, a similarly signed polaroid of Warhol shown in the identical outfit, likely from the same event, sold at auction in Italy (Farsetti, 28 November, 2015) for $23,000.00. These poses seem to be an attempt to document and comprehend an identity that may have been difficult or impossible to openly acknowledge in the context of the small French towns and communes whose names are occasionally recorded with the dates on some album pages. Indeed, in the earliest of the albums, the figure’s face is in most images heavily crossed out in ink, likely an attempt to protect the identity of the subject in case of discovery.
