It defined an era. It helped to create the foundation for what it means to be a fashion icon. His work told the story of glamorous sophistication, female rebellion and the complexities of beauty and desire. He achieved this remarkable feat with a single little black satin dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the opening sequence of 1961’s “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” From the front, the dress was simple enough: sleek and sleeveless with a flattering bateau neckline. From the back, it was dynamic, sexy and utterly sophisticated with its geometric cutouts and the alluring way it framed the nape of the neck. That moment in that dress tells the audience a lot about Hepburn’s character, Holly Golightly. For one thing, it’s a cocktail dress — an evening dress — and there she is standing on the street peering into the store window with her breakfast. She has been out all night and she does not look wrecked. In fact, she looks splendid. The dress is not easy to wear. It follows the curves of the body. It reveals the arms. But it’s not a dress that constrains a woman. It requires effort but not sacrifice. The dress is special. It makes a woman want to slink about, controlled and teasing. It’s possible to envision it on all sorts of shapes — slim, like Hepburn, but also curvy. And it looks as perfect in 2018 as it did 50 years ago. Givenchy didn’t invent the little black dress, but he gave it its enduring cachet. The room takes its name from the highest court of the Holy See, the "Segnatura Gratiae et Iustitiae", which was presided over by the pontiff and used to meet in this room around the middle of the 16th century. Originally the room was used by Julius II (pontiff from 1503 to 1513) as a library and private office. The iconographic programme of the frescoes, which were painted between 1508 and 1511, is related to this function. It was certainly established by a theologian and meant to represent the three greatest categories of the human spirit: Truth, Good and Beauty. Under Leo X (pontiff from 1513 to 1521) the room was used as a small study and music room, in which the pontiff also kept his collection of musical instruments.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0512/4826/7423/files/Raffaello_Sanzio_Da_Urbino._After_C2_A0Study_of_Erato_22126.jpg?v=1722190471
22753-orejudos-dom-etienne-stephen-here-comes-the-groom-inscribed-graphic-book
Orejudos, Dom "Etienne", "Stephen". Deciphering the title ("Quando il sol nel orizonte...") is already problematic, as it has to be read word for word, albeit with irregular syllable connections, from the back, to then result in the Italian: "When the sun (sets on the horizon), love remains everywhere the victory". However, this decryption fails with a five-line poem below, whose letters and words are arranged according to a different system. Above it, in lighter ink, as was also used in many parts of the manuscript, is the name "Marcantonio Croce". Since this is unlikely to be the bishop of Tivoli of the same name from the first half of the 16th century, he can probably be identified as the Minorite brother Antonio Croci, a musician born in Modena. In 1633 he became organist of S. Francesco in Bologna and in 1642 "maestro dei novizi e di cappella" of the cathedral there.

The manuscript appears to have been a secretly kept sketchbook (hence the encryption in the title, to which the author only added his name later), since it only contains songs with secular texts, mostly love songs. Among them are also pieces by colleagues, such as Giovanni Giacomo Arigoni (1597-1675), who is the only one mentioned by name. The text "Se per l'oro d'un crine" is known from a cantata by Alessandro Grandi, published in Venice in 1626. Whether only the words or also the music are the same remains to be determined. Alessandro Grandi could in turn have been a student of Giovanni Croce, who was certainly a relative of Antonio. The text of another vocal piece, "Ah Clori", is known from a setting by Antonio Rigatti (Madrigal, Venice, 1636). These few selected examples show that Croce (or Croci) was well acquainted with the genre of love songs. Croce also wrote a work on music theory, "Geminato compendio" (Venice 1642). The contributions of a later owner probably date from the early or middle of the 18th century, some in thick black writing, some in very hasty sketches. These include a "Spagnoletta", dance pieces, some minuets, and a small piece entitled "Ponte rotto" (probably referring to the ancient bridge in Rome) to a children's song melody.

The manuscript is written from the front and back, with the back section only comprising 12 leaves and the music ruling (lines) were evidently done all at one point throughout. Between the two sections, approximately 10 leaves were removed at some point, which may have been left blank. The laid paper has a watermark, a circle with a standing angel figure, a trefoil above it, and a countermark, which cannot be precisely identified. The closest is No. AT3800-PO-21415 (WZ Information System, Piccard Collection, Trento, around 1590). An extremely interesting manuscript from this period of upheaval in northern Italian vocal music and worthy of great research.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0512/4826/7423/files/Antonio_Croci_Italian_Musical_Manuscript_Song_Book_23526a.jpg?v=1722190791
medieval-comb-medieval-ivory-comb
[Music Iconography] [Violin] 18th Century Carved Spherical Pocket Genre Scene

An extraordinary spherical hinged 'pocket' diptych, a whimsy which opens upon a miniscule bone carving depicting four men seated in a fenced yard under trees, three drinking beer, and one playing a fiddle. Rolf de Maré understood that his era made it possible to create a modern performance by bringing together the artists of the time. He created a work of impressive quality and diversity. The ballets toured the world, establishing (?) an entirely new art. With the Ballets Russes, the Swedish Ballets demonstrated that a daring performance outside of clannish conventions is possible and is accepted by the public. It was necessary to "take a risk." Rolf de Maré understood this and went the furthest in the adventure, always accepting the most novel projects without ever trying to restrict them. It is regrettable that such an effort stopped just as it was about to establish itself on the world stage. Carina Ari and Jean Börlin were the driving forces behind this courageous troupe. Their talent has always been able to take advantage of the sometimes arduous stage demands imposed by the novelty of the show. The Swedish Ballets will remain intimately linked to the History of Modern Art. Provenance: Anne Marie Berger Collection

Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes arrived in Paris in 1909 and immediately turned ballet into a high fashion in the Western hemisphere. But in 1920 a rival introduced itself to Paris: the Ballets Suédois. This company dared to perform in the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, home ground of the Russians before the First World War. The newcomers quickly established themselves in the French capital and challenged Diaghilev's concept of avant-garde ballet. They took modernism to a new level and defined avant-garde not through the brilliance of ballet stars or spectacular extravaganza but through a concept that extended beyond all known theatrical conventions. Throughout its brief and hectic existence from 1920 to 1925, the Ballets Suédois were constantly criticised for being not Swedish enough as well as too Swedish, and above all for not presenting real ballet. In many ways the critics were right. The company was more international than Swedish in its character and instead of reinforcing the balletic tradition it searched for new paths in dance. Two ex-convicts, Perry Smith and Richard Hickock, were captured six weeks later, put on trial, found guilty of the murders and sentenced to death. They would remain on death row for nearly six years, before both being executed on April 14, 1965. Even before they were apprehended, writer Truman Capote had developed an interest in the story and traveled to Holcomb, Kansas, to interview the locals. After Smith and Hickcock were imprisoned, Capote interviewed both extensively, eventually befriending them and serving as an official witness to their executions. He compiled over 8,000 pages of research notes while writing In Cold Blood, which was first published as a four-part serial in The New Yorker, beginning on September 25, 1965. Random House released it in book form on January 17, 1966, where it achieved overnight success.

In his story of the killers, Richard Hickock and Perry Smith, Capote paints an especially empathetic portrait of Smith. Capote describes him: “dark, moist eyes”; “pink lips and a perky nose”; “a quality of roguish animation.” Capote waits until the end of the book to reveal the gruesome facts of the crime. The work is written for reciter (voice-type unspecified in the score, but traditionally performed by a soprano) who delivers the poems in the Sprechstimme style accompanied by a small instrumental ensemble. Though the music is atonal, it does not employ Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique, which he did not use until 1921. Among Schoenberg's most celebrated and frequently performed works, its instrumentation – flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano with standard doublings and in this case with the addition of a vocalist – is an important ensemble in 20th- and 21st-century classical music and is referred to as a Pierrot ensemble.

Dimitri Mitropoulos was Greece’s most prolific conductor and New York Philharmonic Music Director from 1949-1958. Widely regarded as one of the most significant conductors of the twentieth century, he is best remembered for his significant recorded legacy and for his commitment in bringing new compositions to the stage of major symphony orchestras. Indeed, it is thanks to his efforts that many of our current symphonic standards made their way into the repertory. He gave World and American premiers of seminal works such as Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 and Schoenberg’s Erwartung, as well as other major works by Schoenberg, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and many others. His personal collection has been held in private hands since his death in 1960, when it passed to conductor James Dixon, his student and protégé. Mitropoulos came to consider Dixon his son, introducing him to conductors and performing arts institutions around the world, jumpstarting his career. When Mitropoulos died in 1960 he left all his belongings, including his scores, to Dixon. The bulk of the musical library has been subsequently gifted to the University of Iowa’s music library, but a selection of rare items have been selected to be offered for sale exclusively by Schubertiade Music & Arts. These examples, many inscribed to the conductor from composers or associates, have only occasional markings from the conductor himself who committed all music to memory before his first rehearsal of the repertoire - a highly unusual method! Some of these scores, however, were also subsequently used by James Dixon as part of his working reference library for many years and include his occasional markings.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0512/4826/7423/files/Mitropoulos_Schoenberg_PierrotLunairesigned24341a.jpg?v=1754083392
24351-mann-thomas-death-in-venice-signed
Mann, Thomas. He composed an array of violin concertos, string quartets, sinfonia concertantes, violin duets, sonatas, two symphonies and an assortment of stage works, notably opéra comique.

Bologne probably composed his violin concertos initially for his own use, although their later publication ensured their wider dissemination. Their reputation is further attested to by the existence of manuscript copies of the works most of which appear to postdate their publication. There are also several concertos of uncertain authenticity that are preserved in manuscript parts that possibly represent works composed later in Saint-Georges’ career but to date no detailed investigation of these works has been carried out. Saint-Georges remained active as a performer after the French Revolution, albeit in different circumstances to those under which he worked in the 1770s and 1780s, and it is possible that he continued to compose.

Saint-Georges generally published his concertos and symphonies concertantes in pairs, typically with one work scored for strings alone and the second with wind instruments.

Also unusual here are the three Concerti by Ivan Mane Jarnović, the violinist and composer who was Italian but whose family was of Ragusan (today in Croatia) origin. With his signature biting humor and provocative flair, Chapman offers a tongue-in-cheek take on the royal drama that has unfolded in recent years. The title is a playful twist on Harry’s book title, serving as a metaphor for his difficult position within the royal family. By referring to the prince as a “spare prick,” Chapman underscores the idea that Harry is both superfluous and a source of controversy.
