Delaunay, Sonia. (1885–1979) [Damase, Jacques. (1930–2014)]. Projet pour la lettre R, ca. 1970.

Gouache and graphite on vellum interpretation by the Russian-born artist of Damase's poem "Rossignol Joli," which reads "Rossignol joli, / Do, si, do, ré, mi, / Joliu rossignol, / Mi, fa, mi, fa, sol, / Rossignol cendré, / Fa, sol, fa, mi, ré, / Fait chanter l'écho, / Fa, sol, mi, ré, do."  In fine condition.  10 x 12.5 inches (25.5 x 32 cm). In fine condition. From the collection of Jacques Damase.

After the 1941 death of her husband, the French artist Robert Delaunay, Sonia Delaunay began working primarily in gouache, though she continued to paint in her vibrant, geometric style.  In 1964, the publisher and gallery owner Jacques Damase contacted her regarding the possibility of illustrating a collection of his poems.  Their collaboration would prove fruitful, lasting many years and producing such works as Rythmes-Couleurs and L'Alphabet.

"Sonia Delaunay was a multi-disciplinary abstract artist and key figure in the Parisian avant-garde.  Alongside her husband, Robert Delaunay, she pioneered the movement Simultanism.  Her exploration of the interaction between colours has created a sense of depth and movement throughout her oeuvre." (Tate)

Described by De Chirico as a ‘publisher–poet,’ Jacques Damase published the work of Jean Cocteau, Jean-Paul Sartre, Paul Eluard and Charlie Chaplin; Jean Louis Barrault’s first book on the theatre; and the first book on Braque’s sculpture. In 1949 he became editor of the review Labyrinthe. His own books included studies on the works of Jacques Callot, Braque, Chagall and Picasso, as well as the life and art of Sonia Delaunay. From 1964 until Delaunay’s death, Damase was her publisher; he was also responsible for the exhibitions of her works in all media.
