John Lithgow, long known as one of America's great character actors and winner of six Emmy awards, was originally interested in becoming a painter when he first arrived at Harvard University in 1963. This is a rare copy of one his classmate's plays and includes four original woodcuts by Lithgow from his Sophmore year.

In 2017 Lithgow was the recipient of Harvard's Art Medal and in celebration of that, Houghton Library presented an exhibition of the actor’s drawings, featuring designs for student productions at the Loeb Drama Center and caricatures depicting his career on Broadway and in television.
