8vo. 8.5 x 6". 95 pp. Original green paper-covered boards, quarter-bound in black cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very fine copy, in clean, bright dustwrapper, with small tears and wear to edges, not price-clipped ($4.95 to the front flap). Signed and inscribed on the ffe "For Mrs. Fritz Benedict with my best / John Ashbery / 7 January 1970," together with a printed "with the compliments of" folding card from the publisher, inscribed in blue ink "the author. To be published Feb. 7." The printed Acknowledgments page preceding the Contents, begins, "I am grateful to Mrs. Fritz Benedict of Aspen, Colorado, daughter of Arthur Cravan, for permission to publish a translation of the latter's poem, 'Des Paroles.'"

A fine association copy of one of the poet's greatest books, Ashbery's fourth full collection, which includes some of his finest poems, among them 'Soonest Mended', 'For John Clare', and the extended concluding 'Fragment'. 

Jemima Fabienne Cravan (1919 - 1997) was daughter of poet and artist Mina Loy and her husband, Swiss writer, poet, artist and boxer Arthur Cravan (pseudonym of Fabian Avenarius Lloyd) and was married to Frederic Allen "Fritz" Benedict (1914 - 1995).
