[Monk, Thelonious Sphere. (1917–1982)] Leonard, Herman. (1923–2010). Thelonious Monk Minton's Playhouse, New York City, 1949..

Original black and white selenium-toned photograph on warm tone silver gelatin paper, from the Images of Jazz portfolio, Volume III, capturing the influential American jazz pianist and composer intently writing music at a piano, enveloped in a smoky atmosphere. Signed in ink by the photographer to the lower right, with title at left and numbered 12 from the edition of 30. The approximate sheet size measures 20" x 16". In fine condition with very mild surface wear and toning. Provenance: Barbara Gillman (1937-2023), an influential American art gallerist.

Originally apprenticed to Yousuf Karsh in Ottawa, Canada, Herman Leonard's interest in the jazz scene took him to New York, where he established his own studio and shot publicity portraits for up and coming jazz musicians. Among his many subjects were Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones and Thelonious Monk.

Minton's was founded by tenor saxophonist Henry Minton in 1938 and is known for its role in the development of modern jazz, also known as bebop, where in its jam sessions in the early 1940s, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke, Charlie Christian, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie pioneered the new music. Minton's thrived for three decades until its decline near the end of the 1960s, and its eventual closure in 1974.
