Hardcover. 8vo. x. 253 pp. The rare first formal book publication of Moore's "A Visit From St. Nicolas" which begins with the famous line, "'Twas the night before Christmas," also including works of Washington Irving, John Inman, Samuel Low, George Morris, etc.  Publisher's decorated relief-stamped olive green cloth, spine and boards in gilt including a decorative vase on the front and back. Frontis illustration covered with a heavily toned sheet. Scattered staining to boards, with a dark stain on front, extensive foxing throughout as generally seen, otherwise very good. 

"Moore, a professor of Hebrew, wrote the poem in 1822 as a Christmas gift for his children. A house guest copied it in the fall of 1823, and later sent her copy to the editor of the troy 'Sentinel,' where it was first published, anonymously, December 23, 1823...The authorship was first disclosed in the Troy 'Budget,' December 23, 1838...Not until St. Nicholas passed through the crucible of Doctor Clement Clarke Moore's mind and imagination did the patron saint of childhood ever ride in a sleight, or have eight tiny reindeer with bells joyfully to convey him...on Christmas eve; nor was he dressed in furs, nor dud he smoke a pipe, nor did he ever get into the homes of goods little boys and girls by going down the chimneys..." (Grolier American 100, 52).
