Elaborate ink and gouache original costume design for the ballerina/actress Yvonne Barnes (1928 - 1990) in the role of "Crystalized Flower - Violet" in the 1951 Sadlers Wells Theatre Ballet production of The Nutcracker. Signed "Beaton" in purple crayon, titled lower right in ink, with pencil notation ("taffetas+Satin+tuile") at the foot and sample fabric swatches pinned to upper left. Affixed with brittle tape (easily removed) on verso to old mat, some toning and staining around the edges, left edge irregularly trimmed, overall fine. 11 x 15 inches.

When the Sadlers Wells Theatre Ballet toured America in 1951-2, The Nutcracker was restaged by Frederic Ashton. Cecil Beaton, who won three Tony awards on Broadway for costume and set design, and Academy Awards for Gigi and My Fair Lady, designed new sets and costumes.
